3 Reasons To Read During Quarantine

  1. You wanted to but never had enough time

Surprise! You now have the time. If you are like me, before COVID-19, your days probably consisted of going to class, working, and spending way too much time on social media. You had a strong desire to read, but never could find the time to sit down and commit to a book. Now, you probably find yourself with more free time than your old schedule allowed. So, let’s read! If you don’t already have a book in mind, I recommend you check out this list of books to read during quarantine

2. You need an escape from reality

My favorite aspect of reading is that it provides an escape from reality in a way that no T.V. show or movie or other art form ever could for me. A good book grabs a hold of it’s readers and sucks them into a new world. That sounds pretty good right about now, doesn’t it? Not only are you transported into a world where COVID-19 doesn’t exist, but you are distracted from the one in which it does. Instead of dwelling on the anxiety, the uncertainty, the fear that is associated with the pandemic, you are somewhere else alongside other people as they navigate their lives. This is a luxury since, at times, it may feel like yours have been put on hold (and particularly boring). In this world, you do not feel alone or isolated. You are surrounded by characters. Characters that you can relate to, characters you can’t stand, characters that intrigue you, characters with problems that are far more pressing, entertaining, dramatic than your own. These new characters, this new setting, this new world, can be a safe haven in these unsettling times. Get lost in a book.

3. You are searching for a fun, different way to learn

When you think about learning, you might think of a teacher, a desk, a school. You might think hours of homework, late nights at the library, studying for tests with flashcards and Quizlets until your brain feels like it might explode. Doesn’t sound very fun, does it? Reading has countless benefits. One benefit being that it is an enjoyable way to learn while in quarantine. Whether you are reading a thick, 700 page Biology textbook or a romance novel by Nicholas Sparks, with each turn of a page, you are learning. You are learning new, impressive words, terms to add to your vocabulary, new concepts, new perspectives, new cultures, etc. that you lacked knowledge of before. Knowledge is power.
