5 Reasons To Blog in College

1. Self-Expression

Writing is a form of therapy, a page that will listen without judgement or feedback. Writing freezes time like a form of teleportation. Writing is an escape. My words come out clear. I don’t stammer, lose my train of thought, or omit key information because I spoke too fast. I can delete and add whatever I want and edit until my story is the truest representation of me and what I need to say. When it’s finally down on paper, I feel at ease. In college, it feels like our brain are working in over drive with vocabulary words, random facts, daily tasks to complete, decisions to be made, etc. all floating around. This is how I empty it. This is how I sort and make sense of it all. This is how I relax and escape from the chaos of it all. Write it down. Write it all down and begin to heal and move on.

2. Help Others

The chances are, no matter what you are writing about, someone else could benefit from it. For example, my last blog post was about the negative effect that Instagram has on my mental health/confidence. There may be other people out there searching online wondering if others feel the same way they do, wondering if they are crazy, wondering what they should do in a certain situation, etc. My passion, like many others, is to help people by providing a safe place, a place where someone can go and instantly know that they are not alone. There are others out there feeling what you are feeling, going through what you are going through, that need help. There are others that understand. You may not be able to see them or touch them, but they are there. I am here. Whether you are in college or not, we could all use some help at times. Lets help each other.

3. Memories

A blog can be a collection of memories for you to refer to later on in life. Instagram is another great app for this specific purpose, but a blog can be even more in depth. Not only can you post pictures, but you can add lengthier captions that people are more likely to read, stories that provide background information/context, describe your senses in that moment, etc. Instantly, you are able to travel back in time through your blog posts. Who hasn’t wanted to retreat to a different, fonder time at some point? I know I have.

4. Job Benefits

In the field of Public Relations, we are often asked to run various social media accounts including blogs. This requires consistency, a clear voice, creativity, etc. By already having a blog that showcases that you know how to create/effectively manage social media, your writing ability, and your personality/what you are passionate about, your employer is sure to be impressed. This can apply for countless other majors as well!

P.S. It is a bonus if your content relates to the subject of the job you are applying for.

5. Improve Your Writing

Remember, practice always makes perfect. During your time writing for your blog, you will be able to better identify your strengths and weaknesses and improve with each post. You should be able to see an evolution in your content from good to great to amazing as you continue.
